GIRLGENIUS SHOWCASE

GIRLGENIUS is a showcase of queer/femme singer-songwriters from the Washington DC area. Five artists will take the stage at Songbyrd to share their unique songwriting style and sound. In partnership with the DC Abortion Fund, proceeds from the show will be donated towards the expansion of abortion access around the DMV and beyond.

Josee Molavi

Josee Molavi brings soul-jazz vocals to center stage in her genre-bending, artful sound. Molavi is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter grown from blues rock roots. With her electric stage presence and dynamic discography, Molavi fronts a five-piece band of high-caliber multi-genre musicians (aka her childhood friends) to combine her intricate melodies with alternative soul instrumentation. Altogether Molavi’s music is groovy, nostalgic and inimitable.

Devonly

Devonly is an indie rock singer-songwriter from Washington DC. Her music is a conversation with her existential-nostalgic-twentysomething self, centering lyrics like confessional journal entries she often screamsings to made-up chords. Influenced by the queer catharsis of boygenius, dreamy vibe of The Cure, and reflective reverence of Mitski, Devonly’s relatable sound is all her own.

Veronique

Veronique is a DC-based singer-songwriter with roots in South Florida. Deeply influenced by Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, she weaves classic jazz vocals with witty lyricism and memorable pop choruses. Veronique commands a three-octave range and a sentimental nature, drawing comparisons to Amy Winehouse, Joy Crookes and Laufey. She daylights as a lawyer in the gender justice movement, hoping for a world where more people can live with the dignity and delight they’re entitled to.

ok ivy

ok ivy is an indie singer-songwriter in Washington, D.C. by way of Oklahoma. She writes sad songs on a ukulele and hopes you’ll like them. With a wry humor, an energetic band, blisteringly vulnerable lyrics, and a long way to go in therapy, ok ivy’s music is an exercise in turning self-conscious private thoughts into public conversations on grief, loss, fear, and love.

Kind of Christine

Christine is a singer-songwriter based in D.C. and she writes on the guitar and piano. She uses music to process things she fears; her hopes, anxieties, rage, grief, and everything in between. Though she was classically trained on the piano, she likes to experiment and write with sounds from rock, pop, soul and other genres.
