THE R&B CLUB DISCUSSES THE MUSIC OF NEO-SOUL
Does the term “neo-soul” make you think of a certain style of music, a particular visual aesthetic, or some combination of both? Positioning goes a long way, and neo-soul (aka “new soul”) was used to frame a subgenre that deviated from the direction contemporary R&B took during the ’90s as a revival of soul music’s golden era. But in hindsight, it also lumped together several artists who had little in common aside from the fact that they couldn’t be easily categorized.
In July, the R&B Club celebrates neo-soul by exploring the subgenre’s history and the artists who carried it. That means plenty of Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Jill Scott, Maxwell, and the other usual suspects, as well as several artists who don’t immediately come to mind. In hindsight, did neo-soul revive the past on the strength of sly marketing and exceptional music? No, but it succeeded in adding a new layer to R&B at the turn of the century that ultimately helped change its future for the better.
Join us at Songbyrd on Sunday, July 14, from 12-2pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door, but we’d advise getting yours ASAP.

The R&B Club is a cultural gathering founded in 2018 that discusses the influence of R&B music. In other words, think of it as a musical book club style meetup. Follow us on social media at @therandbclubdc for more information.
