string(2019) "After ten years of playing, recording, and producing indie rock music in D.C. with acts including Moozy, You and Me and You, Drew Beckman + The Boundary Boys, and Friends of Friends, Dylan Rockwell found his songs taking a new direction. Upon first listen, one might describe that direction as "more acoustic", but would soon find the same focused intensity that's always been there. The debut EP "False Dawn" features lush full band arrangements that tend to bloom as the lyrics reveal each song's true nature. The band is made up of longtime collaborators Pat Gunning, Nick Fliakas, Zack Be, and Reed Doherty (members of Moozy), and features Dave Epley (from DC's wiley country group Heaven Forbid) on pedal steel. That's 6 stellar musicians total if you're keeping count. While the songs on "False Dawn" were curated for their cohesiveness and tone, this EP release show will also feature a majority of unheard and unreleased music, some of which will sound like a vast departure from the restrained simmer of the EP songs. Dylan Rockwell is hopelessly dedicated to the creation of music and the best songs are always still yet to come.

You could call Wishy’s story a lucky one. After prior monikers and iterations, Wishy was born as a kaleidoscope of alternative music’s semi-recent history, with traces of shoegaze, grunge and power-pop swirling together. On Triple Seven, Indiana songwriters Kevin Krauter and Nina Pitchkites’ musical synergy proves itself to be a rare one–the kind that sounds like someone striking gold. Part sly wink and part warm gratitude, it’s only fitting their much anticipated full length debut is titled Triple Seven.
-
By day Krauter works as a music teacher, giving drum and guitar lessons to students, while Pitchkites is a seamstress by trade and often makes embroidered merch for the band. Coming up in a scene defined by hardcore and emo, Krauter and Pitchkites instead found themselves writing melodies in their heads while driving to work, pulling music from the air and arriving at a blearier, more ethereal interpretation of Midwest expanse. Initially, their music oscillated between hazy dream-pop and heavier alt-rock.
-
The album is a loose web of vignettes and snapshots, capturing Krauter and Pitchkites in a whirlwind couple of years — exiting the pandemic, embarking on an embryonic project, making sense of their musical pasts while forging a musical future alongside one another, each of them on a journey of self-acceptance and self-understanding. Sometimes gorgeous, sometimes festering, and always cathartic, Triple Seven is a vibrant and exhilarating document of self-discovery with the scope and heft of the bygone big-budget rock albums that inspired it.
-- -- “I started this band to force my friends to hang out with me.” says frontman Ryan Walchonski. The post-college sentiment feels silly but pained, like the music coming from DMV band Aunt Katrina. Written by Walchonski alongside local talented collaborators, Aunt Katrina is an exercise in staying in place and making music in your community. The songs on 2023 EP, Hot, careen into place, exciting “pop songs” that never fail to surprise with distorted samples or articulate finger-picking. But it’s the straightforward lyrics and unaffected delivery that circle the dangerously mundane. Aunt Katrina’s live band consists of Ray Brown (Snail Mail), Eric Zidar (Tosser), Laney Ackley, Emma Banks, Connor Peters, and sometimes Nick Miller. Despite what you’ve heard, they are all friends. With their debut release "Pinky Heaven", Pinky Lemon has put forward an eclectic sound that brings together elements of shoegaze, pop, emo, and electronic music. "Pinky Lemon is genre-bending at its finest," -- District Fray Magazine

Pretty Bitter an emo dreampop-ish something or other in dc

Cuni is an emo band hailing from the genre’s birthplace, Washington, DC. The band started as a solo bedroom indie project with the Saturn EP in 2020. Now, it’s evolved into a four-piece that incorporates the same songwriting and twinkly guitars of Saturn, but cranks the intensity knob until it breaks off entirely.

Cuni is louder, faster, and angrier than ever before, mixing elements of midwest emo, post-hardcore, and shoegaze into a live set that’s impossible to stand still to. Cuni consists of Jared Cunanan on vocals and rhythm guitar, Aaron Millison on lead guitar, Franklin Parada on bass, and Lucas Kirby on drums.

string(2672) "People in my life / so beautiful — none of them have the right to be alone," goes the one-two punch in the chorus of Prude's "Cowboy Beatdown," songwriter Nick Bairatchnyi's signature rasp catching around a minor chord as he pleads. "When I call / pick up the phone," he demands, and the instrumentation pummels home this insistence. The single is a shoulder-shaking reintroduction to the DC rock band and the first hint of a full-length record to follow. The song sounds desperate, and for good reason — why should we accept the status quo of allowing ourselves to casually grow apart from the people that sustain us? Prude asks, maintains eye contact, and asks again. Nick Bairatchnyi has long practiced a habit of examining connection in song — the longing for it, the obstacles to it, the surprising shapes it takes — initially forging his insight in beloved indie-pop act The Obsessives, a project formed while Bairatchnyi was just in high school. Even then, his poignant ability to capture the space between individuals was clear — no matter how saccharine their hooks, Bairatchnyi's pathos always grounded the band's emotional palette. The founding of Prude marks a return to Bairatchnyi's native DC — the outfit consists of his childhood friends in Ray Brown (drums) and Alex Bass (bass / mixing / engineering), both also of Snail Mail — but their sound is undeniably inflected by an early adulthood stint in Philadelphia, a city where the form and function of songs are twisted into brilliant, novel results in basements any night of the week. But while some use abstraction to affect distance, Bairatchnyi and his collaborators wield their schooling in it to name the degrees that separate us from one another. "Now I'm part of you and you're part of me," he sings, rivulets of feedback and distortion coursing around him. "Let's close the door and obliterate the mystery.

On their second full length, Chop Shop, you get the sense that there aren't many facets of everyday life that Brooklyn punks Family Vision wouldn't tear apart with scathing takedowns amidst piercing shards of sheet metal guitars and polyrhythmic machine gun rhythms. They're fed up with the state of things but their anger comes from a place of love. Grounded by gritty realism and a sharp sense of melodic song craft and impeccable pacing, their latest record is a confident step into murky waters.

Liability, a psychedelic rock 'n' roll duo based in and around DC, presents their debut rock opera album: "Gloria & The Homesick Monk", recorded and engineered by Don Zientara at Inner Ear Studios. Adele Marie (vocals/drums/keys) and Sid Satellite (guitar/vocals) bring a playful dance of cryptic lyrics, in-your-face melodies, rock'n'roll guitar trance glitches and crowd-surfing dolls. Liability's record will take you through waves of drama, death/rebirth, homesickness and joy.

Ammonite is a queer power trio bringing a little jangle and twang to an edgy 90s/00s sound. Formed by scene veterans Erin Frisby (they, them), Selena Benally (she, her), and Alyson Cína (she, her) in late 2022, the band immediately began garnering attention for their expressive live shows, vocal harmonies, and tight songwriting. Debuting on The National Museum for Women in the Arts "The Tea" program, Ammonite had a busy inaugural year that included the Fort Reno summer concert series, features of their demo recording on Bandcamp and Country Queer, charting in the top 40 for the year on AltQ radio, headlining Frederick Pride, playing Rockville Pride, and a sold out show at the Rex Theatre, as well as the opening night of Artomatic DC 2024. TCGB! has shared the stage with acts like Desert Sharks, Nicole Yun, Quiet Hollers, Twin Limb, Knifing Around, and Ecstatic International.

The Scheme currently consists of: Truett Reed (guitar), Miles Townes (bass), Cameron Pulley (percussion) and Don Zientara (guitar). Originally started as a neighborhood lawn party band, the group grew into a bigger outfit. Each brings differing styles of music into the mix that merges into a collaboration pop-train wreck! that works!
