Hala

Hala (pronounced haw-luh) is the performance moniker of Detroit-based musician Ian Ruhala. Ruhala’s music is at once precise and playful, skipping breezily between decades and their attendant musical aesthetics while executing them with care and sincerity. On his studio debut Red Herring, Ruhala elevates this formula, applying his genre-agnostic blueprint to a set of songs that comprise a no-concept concept record: a varied LP which explores the tragedy and comedy—often, both at once—that color and confound the modern 22-year-old’s existence.

To execute his wide-lens vision, Ruhala worked with producer Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Vance Joy, Ra Ra Riot) at his legendary secluded Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, Washington. Apart from strings—played respectively by longtime Brandi Carlile collaborator Josh Neumann and Andrew Joslyn—Ruhala wrote and performed each instrument on the record, including guitar, piano, bass, drums, baritone ukulele, xylophone, vibraphone, and all vocals.

The result is a coming-of-age record from an artist recognizing that cohesiveness need not only be expressed in structural sameness. It can and should be found in other experiences, in the complex, poignant, life-and-death fleetingness of a three-and-a-half-minute pop song. Or better yet, 12 of them back-to-back.

Under the moniker LUWTEN, Dutch artist Tessa Douwstra records, writes, performs, and produces cunning pop that incites both the head and the heart. In the past Douwstra’s music was an attempt to cast a light on the introverted, embracing comfort in your own solitude and selfhood. Forthcoming second album Draft takes on a different challenge: how to be that person with others in the room.

The name Draft speaks for itself: these songs evoke the feeling of the breeze underneath the door; a subtle reminder of becoming open to another. To illustrate this notion further, LUWTENtransmutes different sounds together with quizzical warmth: field recordings and organic noise are laced intricately with electronic sounds and melodic live instrumentation. On Draft, these productions tell as much a story as LUWTEN’s compassionate vocals and soulful lyricism. The title track, for instance, features voice memos from Douwstra’s inner circle of friend, family and loved ones, all of them synthesized together as one big collective voice surrounding her’s.

“Sleeveless” (with the stunning award winning video) imagines a state in which an individual can move through existence like an open book. “Control” is a club anthem playing out through the lens of the chronic second guesser, entertaining the thought of gaining something out of the act of losing control."Don’t Be A Stranger” conversely, wants to stay in touch and “Full Well” is a scream into the void for answers. All these songs are reaching out in a certain way; uncompromising, but without losing the other from sight.

The embrace and empathy in LUWTEN’s music lie in the process itself. She’s looking for new ways, without reading the manual first.

On a warm summer evening in the year of our Lord 2015, a young college drop out is in his backyard, guitar in hands scribbling lazily on a loose sheet of paper. He taps his pen on his chin intensely, contemplating the first and only line that reads: "I'm going down". he stares down at his pathetic excuse for an opening line and calls it a night. "eh, I'll try again tomorrow" he says. This is his mantra. He didn't know it then, but that pathetic little line would be the birthplace of a little band called Mustard Service and that pathetic little line would be the opening line of a little album called Zest Pop.

Their Debut album was released in June of 2017, relying solely on live shows and streaming platform algorithms for promotion and exposure. The algorithm gods took pity on these poor fools and granted them a world-wide audience over the span of the next three years, leading into the release of their sophomore album titled "Ces't La Vie" in March of 2020.

WEIRD NIGHTMARE is the new solo project of Alex Edkins, singer/guitarist of METZ. Tons of red-line distortion cut with the type of tunecraft that thrills the moment it hits your ears. "I let my obsessive love of '60s pop, garage rock and Flying Nun come to the surface. I feel like my true musical personality comes out in these songs.” Album out on Sub Pop Records on May 20.

string(1343) "Maude Latour has a way with words. The 21-year-old singer, songwriter and current philosophy student at Columbia University has a knack for crafting the kind of stories that are at once both universal and specific — the hallmark of a born storyteller.

“The written word is an important part of my life philosophy and religion,” says Latour, who grew up between London, Hong Kong and Sweden before finally settling down in New York City. “I feel I'm in like some discourse with it always, some grand relationship with writing things down.” Her songs, she says, are like journal entries in that they’re “a declaration that I’m human, that I’m alive.”

If that sounds a bit mystical, it’s because it is. Latour describes her connection with her fanbase as “a little otherworldly,” bolstered by the fact that to date she’s responded to every DM and comment she’s ever received. Ultimately, though, the music is the connecting glue that holds all the pieces together. “There's so many contradictions,” Latour says of the reality we live in. “And yet, there are these moments of connection when we all realize it's the same molecules. Those moments are very accessible in my world, and I think it’s my life's mission to bring them to the forefront of daily life through my music.”
