Cumbia Heights is an Alternative tropical band based in Washington DC, made up of 8 immigrants representing Latin America from Tierra del Fuego to the international border in northern Mexico.

Bottled Up’s Grand Bizarre, the band’s debut album via Misra Records, took the idea of punk and made it global, digital, and online in 2022. From finding meaning in a world riddled with climate change, playing love’s supernatural mind games, or as frontman Nikhil Rao puts it, the daily act of “subconsciously submitting and surrendering to death” — Bottled Up produced an utterly danceable album of as-the-world-burns Italo, funk, and new wave.

Bay Ledges delivers a hypnotic form of indie-pop that alters the way we experience time, inviting both a dreamlike nostalgia and heightened attention to the present moment. In the making of Bay Ledges’ sophomore album Rivers, singer/songwriter/producer Zach Hurd brought his inventive musicality to a body of work partly written in response to the death of several family members, infusing each track with equal parts unguarded feeling and unfettered imagination. With its title referring to two distinct bodies of water in his home state of Maine, Rivers arrives as a quietly enthralling reflection on love, loss, and change.
-
The follow-up to Bay Ledges’ 2022 debut album Ritual, Rivers expands on its predecessor’s kaleidoscopic sound and embraces an even more free-form approach to songcraft and production. But while the new LP contains some of his most experimental and emotionally layered output to date, its songs remain rooted in the playful spirit, graceful musicianship, and timeless sense of melody first shown on Bay Ledges’ breakthrough single “Safe” (a 2016 release that reached No. 3 on Spotify’s Global Viral Chart), as well as the effortlessly warm presence he’s brought to the stage in touring with the likes of Goth Babe and Big Wild and performing sold-out headlining shows at such iconic venues as the Troubadour in Los Angeles.

From beginning to end, the sparkling pop tunes off Claud Mintz’s magnetic first album, Super Monster, capture the assorted stages of a relationship’s delight and dejection — the giddy sensation of a first kiss during the beaming “Overnight,” the heartsick longing of a pending rejection during the yearning “Jordan,” the reluctant call for a requisite breakup during the smoldering “Ana.” “I’d write about how I felt in the moment, then two months later, a year later. My perspective evolved on one relationship with the same person,” Claud says. “I changed so much that it feels like a different person writing some of these songs — but it’s just me.” The debut release on Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records, Super Monster is a vertiginous but joyous coming-of-age reckoning with such young love. Claud sees relationships as games of endless wonder, intrigue, and second-guesses, a roller-coaster thrilling you even when it’s terrifying. If “Gold” turns the tension and indecision of a bad match into an undeniable bit of lithe disco, “That’s Mr. Bitch To You” uses a spurt of righteous indignation to fuse a little soul and emo into one breathless hook. Super Monster is like a compulsive compilation that Claud culled from a lifetime of musical enthusiasms — the arcing alt-rock of ’90s airwaves, the rapturous pop of ’00s chart-toppers, the diligent genre-hopping of modern online life. Claud emerges as the chameleonic mastermind of this mélange, channeling all of love’s emotions into songs so sharp they make even the hardest times feel fun. During the Summer of 2018, Claud released an EP under the name Toast, their duo with Joshua Mehling, Claud’s best friend since their first day at Syracuse University. The band was casual but enthusiastic; Claud would spend whatever time remained between classes writing to beats, eventually opting to skip classes to give these burgeoning tunes more attention. They were stunned when anyone else responded, especially when Terrible Records released their debut EP during Toast’s second semester. What would happen, Claud wondered, if all their time could go to music? Claud soon left Syracuse and subsequently settled on this new solo name. “Leaving school,” Claud says, “gave me space and time to become a better writer. And I knew no one could explain me better than I could.” Claud’s life and output became feverish. Though based in New York, Claud would visit their mother in California and father near Chicago or go on tour and make new friends. More than 50 songs emerged during that brief span, reflections on the flings and loves of life as a young artist. Early in 2020, Claud decamped for a few months to their father’s home, the same place Toast had finished its debut. Claud sorted through those dozens of pieces, whittling them down to the baker’s dozen that shape Super Monster. Claud finally emerged from that Midwest cocoon, heading to New York to record at Electric Lady Studios exactly 50 years since Jimi Hendrix’s first session there. For years, Claud had fantasized about working at Electric Lady, so they recruited a wide network of close friends and new collaborators to finish Super Monster. Mehling played on and co-produced several tracks, including finale “Falling With the Rain.” That enchanting closer is performed by Shelly, a friendship band consisting of Claud, Mehling, Claire Cottrill, and Noa Getzug. Nick Hakim harmonizes on “Ana,” while Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jake Portrait adds synth and guitar. These friends and more buoy Claud, lifting their tender songs skyward. On the final night of work at Electric Lady, studio manager Lee Foster called to ask if Claud liked Daniel Johnston, the late and legendary songwriter whose artwork he manages. Foster arrived on bike a few minutes later, brandishing a scan of an unpublished Johnston painting called “Claud & the Supermonster.” A person sprang from the grass — a monster maybe, but absolutely jubilant all the same. The image resonated with Claud’s own quest for an individual identity as a queer person, sometimes bound up in feelings of isolation. Claud asked Foster if they could title the album Super Monster as an ode to Johnston’s kindred outlook. The cover Claud painted — a stunningly surreal self-portrait, as rich as these deceptively sophisticated songs — offers an homage to Johnston’s universe and a kind of introduction to Claud’s own world. Perhaps you are in the throes of one of these romantic moments yourself right now, resentful of a frustrating paramour like Claud during “Pepsi” or indulging in lust like “In or In Between.” Or maybe these songs recall those wild days and tough situations. Incisive, instant, and addictive Super Monster works on either level — to remind us of love’s wild ups and downs or to help us deal with them in real time.

A boisterous rising star with a bright falsetto and golden pen, Kyle Dion can’t stay put. After releasing his heartfelt ode to traditional R&B, SUGA, in 2019, he couldn’t help but expand his talents and set his eyes on creating a classic turn-up album. Playfully rapping and exuding even more bold confidence, Dion is reinventing himself in the next chapter of his career, showing off the fullness of his personality by throwing out any and all rulebooks. The proudly independent artist possesses a soul from another era and creates a sound refreshing to any generation. From the small community in Florida where he grew up to effervescent Los Angeles, where he’s worked with artists like Kehlani, Kali Uchis, and PartyNextDoor, Dion is blazing a unique path. Dion’s new album, SASSY, that dropped September 17th, features rap and R&B titans like Kari Faux, Duckwrth, Ja Rule and Channel Tres. The new album is inspired by his time touring and exploring international territory in support of his debut album 2019’s SUGA, marks a new era for the “rising star” (PAPER) as he sheds his melancholy in favor of more bright and buoyant tunes. SASSY is a bold and bright sonic landscape that promises an unfiltered sound while flaunting a no rules mission statement. It’s a joyous and exclamatory soundtrack to better times.

Welcome to the world of SOLUS! Introducing Keshawn King, a singer, songwriter and guitarist originally from Cambodia, but now resides in Virginia. SOLUS has always had a passion and fascination in music, singing around the house since he was a child. It wasn't until late 2015 that he saw the vision and started putting things in motion. Now, at just 21 years old SOLUS has already crafted an extraordinary discography. Making music not just solo, but bringing friends along the way too. 2020 was quite the year for SOLUS as he dropped his most recent album, 'Scarlett Letters' SOLUS describes his music as enlightenment music. "A vibe for the mind, body, and soul" as SOLUS would call it. Although SOLUS is known for his beautiful vocals and soothing frequencies his work extends much further. You can hear him playing around with different genres left and right, a true master of his work. What separates him from other artists is the raw emotion that is placed behind all his songs. He makes music not just to drop it, but as an offering for people to join his way of thinking and feeling, hopefully creating a diverse cult like fanbase. SOLUS says he draws inspiration from artists like XXXTENTACION, Corbin, Justin Bieber and many more and I think you can hear those roots in his music, but you're also able to distinguish his uniqueness above all. - Jake Jones"

For Another Michael, it all boils down to trust. In mid-2017, the critically acclaimed indie three-piece packed their bags and collectively relocated from Albany, NY to a shared house in West Philadelphia. This move signaled not only the start of a new chapter for the trio, but also a deepening of the bonds that would come to define their captivating debut LP, ‘New Music and Big Pop.’ “It’s hard for a group of people to get closer than living together,” says bassist and producer Nick Sebastiano. “The stronger our connection grew, the more it shaped the music we found ourselves making. It should come as little surprise, then, that ‘New Music and Big Pop’ is Another Michael’s most collaborative work yet. Recorded in a small A-frame house-turned-makeshift studio outside Ferndale, NY, the record finds the trio pushing their sound in a dreamier, more folk-influenced direction, building songs around vulnerable, intimate performances using an ethereal palette of breezy guitars, subtle keyboards, and layered harmonies. As on the band’s early EPs, singer and songwriter Michael Doherty’s mesmerizing voice is front and center here, calling to mind Robin Pecknold or Ben Bridwell in its reedy, crystalline timbre, but it feels more at home than ever before amidst the album’s lush, Technicolor landscape, which the band partnered with Scoops Dardaris to create.

The Line of Best Fit once said, “Jodi has left us broken, bereft but in awe of a talent that can take a couple of seconds and make it your whole world.” On their debut LP Blue Heron, Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Nick Levine’s self-described “queer country” delivers a series of soft-spoken intimate moments capable of turning your inner world upside down with a whisper. It is a type of gentle yet deeply powerful songwriting for fans of artists like Jason Molina, Mount Eerie, Karen Dalton, Julie Doiron, and Duster.
For Levine, Jodi is tentatively described as an alter-ego, a lens in which they can ask questions, push boundaries and step outside of their inner world. Debut full length Blue Heron captures Levine’s continued search for meaning; a search where a couple of chance encounters with a bird—a great blue heron— taught them to embrace the fortuity of creative expression and surrender to its symbolism as a metaphor for understanding their own work, and the world.

Levine encountered the blue heron first while writing the project, and again while recording it. In the first encounter, “It pulled me out of a spiral,” they say. “Maybe you're not in the amount of control that you think and that's actually a good thing. There's so much life happening outside of your head and that’s really grounding to remember.” It was this initial chance encounter that urged Levine to get outside of their own head and breathe the bigger picture more deeply into their writing. Later, during their final days of recording those songs, Levine was visited by a second blue heron. For them, it was a sure sign. Committing fully to the symbolism, Levine had a large blue heron tattooed on their back and submerged themself in a freezing Chicago pond as a means to forever memorialize the Blue Heron as both the album cover and title. Marking the dedication to their art – with wings wide open, ready to take flight – it also signifies the power of music, nature and friendship. While Blue Heron claws at the strands of meaning, and tries to make sense of the world, it’s a work that ultimately only finds closure in the complete surrender to forces greater than oneself. It embraces chance, coincidence, and fate with a sublime curiosity, ultimately finding meaning in the randomness of it all."
