  string(1676) "There are several "R&B cities" across the United States, but one, in particular, has its own distinct sound: Philadelphia. The Sound of Philadelphia, with its signature blend of powerful horns and layered strings, emerged from the late 1960s as an instrumental-rich showcase for songwriting and production teams like Gamble & Huff and McFadden & Whitehead. What's more, Philadelphia International Records became the vehicle for Philly soul, popularizing a style that impacted generations of music within the city and beyond.

Philly's R&B history includes artists such as The Intruders, Patti LaBelle, Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes, Teddy Pendergrass solo, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Phyllis Hyman, Boyz ll Men, Jill Scott, Bilal, Musiq Soulchild, and Jazmine Sullivan. For the R&B Club's fifth anniversary, we're doing something fun and ambitious by going long on Philly's contributions to R&B music while simultaneously toasting to five years of celebrating R&B as a genre.

The R&B Club is a cultural group founded in 2018 by music aficionado Ashley-Dior Thomas, entrepreneur and writer Marcus K. Dowling, award-winning writer Julian Kimble, and critically-acclaimed author and journalist Justin Tinsley to celebrate the legacy of soul music. In other words, think of it as a musical book club.
